For a month, people have been gearing up for the 2024 solar eclipse of April 8, 2024. People flocked to Texas and upstate to see the total eclipse. Many online called this a “once in a lifetime event.”
The eclipse itself reached 80-90 percent coverage on Long Island over two hours. Future eclipses will pass over the US on October 2nd, 2024, March 29th, 2025, and August 12th, 2026. Another total is predicted to pass over the US in 2045.
On April 8th, the Eastern Campus held our own gathering to watch the partial coverage we got. The Science Department set up two telescopes on the quad and an indoor projection in the planetarium in Shinnecock. Campus Activities provided music and refreshments, and the Library handed out eclipse-safe viewing glasses.
Most of the time was spent on the plaza talking to friends, listening to music, and eating eclipse themed snacks.
